Planning out those cold-weather running outfits can be tricky. Too many layers and you feel like a sweaty burrito; too few and you regret starting your run in the first place! In this blog post, we’re sharing 13 winter activewear outfits perfect for running during chilly and bitter cold months.
This post is all about 13 Winter Activewear Outfits Perfect for Runners.

Before we get going, for context, I live in Texas, where it’s literally 75 and sunny one day, and the next, we are dripping the faucets and trying to survive an ice storm. So, if you live somewhere with actual seasons, take this as inspiration, not gospel!
Here are 13 winter activewear outfit ideas to help you tackle the chill while staying comfortable and stylish on your runs. From mild breezes to downright freezing temps, I’ve got you covered—literally.

Activewear Outfits for 50°F and Above: The “It’s Texas Winter” Look

Let’s be real: Texas winter usually means it’s “cold” for five minutes in the morning, and by noon you’re sweating. Here’s how to dress when it’s chilly but not unbearable:
- Short Sleeve tops + Leggings Depending on what time of day you go running, keeping your legs covered may be just the right amount of coverage! Consider adding a lightweight cap to keep heat from escaping from your head and keep the sun out of your eyes.
- Long Sleeve Top + Shorts This combo is my personal preference for cold weather runs! Similar to the short sleeves with long pants, it provides enough coverage to keep you warm while you get going but not be too hot once you get started! One tip is to invest in a moisture-wicking headband to keep your ears warm!
Winter Activewear for 40–50°F: The “Crisp Morning Run” Look

Now we’re getting into proper sweater weather—or, in our case, “running long-sleeve weather.” You’ll want to keep your core warm but still breathable.
- Long Sleeves + Leggings Reminder that quality matters when you’re trying to keep warm! Look for “moisture-wicking” layers so you aren’t running wet and cold. You can throw on wind-resistant jackets or a vest to keep you even more toasty.
- Sports bra + Mid Layer + Shorts (if you’re brave). This combo is for my sweaty girls; if you’re hot-natured and it’s not a full-on blizzard outside, I think you could get away with shorts. I ran my most recent half marathon in shorts in 39-degree weather and felt comfortable.
Outfits for 30–40°F: The “Alright, Now It’s Cold” Look

When temps dip into the 30s, the goal is to keep warm without overheating. Layers are key here! (not that I have much experience running in these conditions 😅).
- Thermal Base Layer + Fleece-lined leggings + Winter Accessories Assuming you’re bold enough to run in this weather, you’ll need some warmer pieces to keep you comfortable. Once you get going, you’ll likely warm up, but your hands, face, and ears will stay pretty cold! For that, some thermal base layers, gloves, and an ear warmer should be perfect.
- Light Jacket + Full-Length Leggings + Winter Running Shoes Because these temps include the perfect temperature for snow and other winter weather, a jacket in addition to the leggings, gloves, and ear warmer may be necessary (unless you’re built differently). You may also consider shoes with more grip, like trail running shoes.
Outfits for Below 30°F: The “Help, I’m an Ice Cube” Look

If you’re brave enough to run when it’s below freezing… bless you. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Vest over Base Layers + Waterproof gloves + Neck Gaiter + Winter Running Accessories. Congrats! You officially love running if you go out in below-freezing temps! Before you go, you want enough layers to keep dry and warm. With that in mind, you still want those thermal base layers (fleece lined, waterproof), as well as your gloves and ear warmers or hat (no cotton, please!).
- All the Thermal Base Layers + Waterproof Accessories + Puffer Jacket The colder the weather the more you may want to consider running in a thicker jacket. This jacket from On is made to be moved in while still keeping you warm. At this point risk for frostbite is real so you’re still going to want to wear those wither accessories to cover you extremities.
Accessories That Are Always a Good Idea:
- Handheld water bottle for hydration
- Reflective gear or High Vis for those early morning or evening runs
- Sunblock (Yes, even in winter!)
